Trick-or-Treaters

• Remember: all regular pedestrian rules still apply. Be sure to cross the road at marked cross walks or well lit corners only. It is safest to work your way up one side of the street and then cross once to the other side.

• Stay away from houses that are not well lit and do not accept rides from strangers or enter any home you feel is unsafe.

• Let your parents know where you are going to be at all times and advise

Please welcome to our new Community Liason Officer!

Hello,

My name is Cst. Mike Walkom. I have recently assumed the role of Community Liaison Constable (CLC), previously held by Cst. Mike Bates (we like to keep it easy here and keep recycling first names). Prior to this position I was a patrol member in your area, as such I am familiar with some of the intricacies of the area. In my new position as CLC I am looking forward to working directly with the community to address the issues in the area. I am looking forward to working with the McCauley community. If you have anything that you would like to bring to my attention don't hesitate to get in touch with me. The easiest way to communicate with me in via e-mail (Michael.Walkom@edmontonpolice.ca) but if you are more comfortable doing so you can leave me a voice mail at 780-421-2603.

Thanks

Cst. Mike Walkom Edmonton Police Service Downtown Division Community Liaison Constable

Celebration of Family Literacy

On Tuesday, January 26 Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers will be celebrating Family Literacy Day through its World of Story Project featuring the Afghani folk tale “Treasure in the Orchard.” As well, we will be releasing a CD of the story recorded in more than 30 languages.

Jan 26, 2010 - The celebration of this will take place at City Hall, with programs at 10:00 AM and 7 PM. Each program will include dramatic tellings of the story by a storyteller and students of Parkdale School and Queen Elizabeth High, music by Global Voices, and the always-popular “popcorn” version of the tale, told in 20 languages by students in EMCN adult English classes.

This is the sixth year EMCN celebrates World of Story. The stories are provided on CDs to families in their own first language and in English so they can use them together to both retain mother languages and to improve English fluency. Each year’s story is selected to feature social values important to healthy community life and volunteers who speak each language then retell the original story in the context of their own culture and in the other languages. All World of Story materials are available on the EMCN website at emcn.ab.ca.

For additional information please contact Suzanne Gross at 423-9682.
